"Sunrise to Sunset" Tuesday Psalm 113:3
“From the rising of the sun to its setting,
the name of the Lord is to be praised!”
Psalm 113:3 (ESV)
Have you ever been awestruck by a sunrise or sunset? I absolutely love these moments which mark the beginning and end of each day. One of the most vivid I’ve experienced was during a road trip my husband and I took down the coast of California. We just happened to stop at Clam Beach while the sun was setting and it was like nothing I had ever seen. The sky filled with fuschia pink, orange, and yellow glistening off the water of the ocean. At one point if felt like we were engulfed into the sunset itself with colors dancing all around us. It was magnificent. In a sight like that it isn’t hard to recognize the beauty and power of the One who made it all. After all, “ the heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork” (Psalm 19:1).
What is the “glory of God”? I was recently intrigued to discover more about what the word “glory” really means and although it has different connotations as well as uses, one aspect of glory when used in the context of God represents, “the beauty and splendor of His Spirit - who He is.” Also included in the use of the word is God’s worthiness of praise, honor and love.
Not only is His beauty and glory displayed in nature but also in each of us.
This is where it gets personal. How real is it to you that you display the glory of God?
I had to stop on this one and open my heart to be honest with the fact that I’d never really given much thought to it. I’ve heard and recognized many times what it means to “give God glory” which is simply to recognize Him and agree with His beauty and worth.
Beyond that though, Gods glory is also revealed in and through us. We are made in His image (Gen.1:27) and made for His glory (Is.43:7). We actually have inherent worth and value and each one of us is talented in some way and referred to as God’s “work of art” (Eph. 2:10).
Take a moment to let that soak in. My understanding of what it means to glorify God is certainly being shaped more through this reality. To glorify Him extends far beyond just the moments where we sing praises to Him or give Him thanks for something in prayer…
We are the glory of God.
We display His beauty and worth.
When we let the gifts and talents He’s given us be seen - we glorify Him. When we let His Spirit love others through us - we glorify Him. The more we come to know Him and acknowledge His worth and splendor in our own lives the more we will become like Him.
As our hearts turn more and more towards God and worship becomes the overflow a chain reaction will occur in our lives. Just as a sunset can cause all who gaze upon it to glorify God it’s maker, so can we. And this also accomplishes what our Psalmist proclaims: every day all day the name of the Lord is to be praised.
We need to let God show us the beauty He created us with and His beauty in others.
He made us for His glory. He finds glory in us and His glory (Spirit) indwells us. That is the foundation for an all-encompassing life of worship as sons and daughters of God.
