Tuesday Psalm 18
“You light a lamp for me.
The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.
In your strength I can crush an army;
with my God I can scale any wall.”
Psalm 18:28-29 NLT
Have you ever experienced one of those days or even weeks where everything seems to be going wrong? Or worse, something really hard or painful happens to you or those you love. If that is you today my heart goes out to you. In the center of painful, trying times everything around us can feel extremely dark. The path out can appear dimly lit if visible at all. The writer of this passage discovered a beautiful aspect of God in the middle of his dark season which he shares with us here.
God is one who lights up the darkness
A familiar scripture in John chapter 1 recently jumped out at me and seems to bring an even greater depth to what the Psalmist is conveying to us.
“In Him was life and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:4-5
This is a scripture describing who Jesus is - the life and the light. Though this passage has a broader application it can also be applied to seasons of personal pain and hardship.
Jesus is the light. Light isn’t something He has.
It’s who He is and no darkness can overcome Him.
He is hope which the darkness cannot mask.
And He is with us and for us in every situation.
This Psalmist indicates that although he was experiencing a period of hardship he discovered God as His light in the midst of it. He goes on to describe how God brought him out of it and gave him strength to defeat all his enemies.
If you are feeling like you are in the dark I pray you will experience His light and hope surrounding you today. May the words in this Psalm light up your heart and give you the strength and courage to overcome.
He is with you and He will not let this overtake you.
You make the darkness tremble
You silence fear”
