You Belong To Love

There’s a chill in the air as stately Knights march determinately out towards an ominous battlefield. Breath from the excited snorts of the powerful war horses selected to carry each Knight pierce the air as they prance forward in anticipation. No one is talking, everyone seems focused. Each one finding solace in the thoughts filling their own minds some, perhaps, gaining strength from memories of where they’ve come from and a determination to return to loved ones left behind.  At the emergence of any anxious, unsettling thoughts, each one glances straight ahead eyes locking on the huge banner that flies above the whole regiment.

That banner steadies them. That banner reminds them who they are and what they are fighting for!

In the middle ages and ancient times armies would design intricate banners that would signify to an opposing army who they were with the hopes of it striking fear into the hearts of those opposing them. Many times these banners would contain the name or crest of their general.  Fighting under a certain banner denoted whose protection or covering you were under. It signified which kingdom you belonged to and that you had their power, resource and favor.

There are many places in the bible where the people of God talk about God’s protection, provision etc. in reference to a banner flying high above them. One in particular is found in Song of Solomon 2:4,

“He brought me to the banqueting house, and His banner over me was love.” (ESV)

It depicts the picture that on the flag that flies over those who have come home as Children of God is written one word – Love.

When we believe in the finished work Jesus Christ accomplished for us on the cross through His death and resurrection and confess Him as Lord of our lives we actually transfer kingdoms. We move from the “dominion (or power) of darkness” to “the kingdom of His beloved Son (Christ), in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (Col.1:13-14).

We belong to the Kingdom of Christ who is the “beloved” or much loved Son of God. We are transferred into a kingdom whose foundation is surrounded in Love. God Himself is Love           (1 John 4:8) and He is governing authority over this kingdom.

Love, to some, might seem like a weak or unassuming banner to bear especially in the context of war.  But a study of what love is, in 1 Corinthians 13 for example, paints Love as a force so powerful it can eradicate the need for war at all.

“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.”

This is a description of who our Leader is, of whom God the Father is. This is a description of what we belong to. When we become Christians, God places His Spirit within us which contains His love (Gal.5:22).

We can now live from Love.

Love is the name we bear. The Love of Father God marches in front of us, covers us and comes in behind us.

We are the people of God therefore we are a people of Love.  And as His love becomes the place we live from, others will be happy to see us coming for Love’s advancement is not a thing to fear.

Surely no heart will faint at the thought of Love taking over.

I pray you feel the Father’s love for you today and His desire to cover and protect you as His own. You are dearly loved. You belong to Love.
