Good Good Father

How do you see God?

What does God look like to you?

I’m not necessarily talking about His physical appearance as that can be pretty abstract. I mean in the sense of who He is. Do you tend to see Him as smiling and joyful or serious and maybe distant?

I never realized the affect my view of God had on my Christian life until I attended a woman’s conference quite a few years ago.  During a time of worship at the end of the night, I stood up near the front and experienced God speak to me in a very unusual way. He quite literally changed the way I imagined Him to be in my mind. I used to see Him as an angry and distant kind of judge who sat on a throne far away from me. On this night that image came into my mind but as I stayed up at the front and the music kept playing a new picture began to develop. To my surprise, the angry judge turned into a sweet elderly gentleman with a great big grin on His face! As the scene in my mind changed, I also felt my heart change. I felt a deep peace and love I’d not experienced before. That day marked the beginning of a journey towards knowing the heart of God as my Father, a process which is still on-going today!

The way we see God has a profound effect on our ability to serve Him.

In Exodus 33:18 Moses asks God to show him His glory. God decides to oblige him yet modifies the request a little in order to keep him alive (vs.20)! In the next few verses we see God reveal how He wants to be known by mankind,

“The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, ‘The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.” Ex.34:6 (ESV)

These five revelations of who God was would become the foundation from which Moses would live out his relationship with God. When I viewed God as distant I did not fully seek to be in His presence. When I viewed Him as irritable and angry I did not want to bother Him with my “baggage”.  I served Him more from fear than from love. Although there is a healthy and proper reverence of Him, for He is Holy, His greatest request of us is that we would love Him (Matt.22:36-40).

  • We will not approach Someone we feel is unapproachable.
  • We will not be happy around Someone we believe is not happy (even though joy is a fruit of His Spirit being alive within us Gal.5:22-23).

This is actually quite a huge topic which involves a process of getting to know God as He lovingly calls us closer to Him. I’m not attempting to cover all sides of it here! I simply want to inspire you to ask Father God to show you areas in your life that you may have an incorrect view of Him or do not really know Him. Like Moses, ask Him to reveal Himself to you the way He truly is. Take time to read and think about Ex. 34:6 and thank God for the way He has revealed Himself in scripture. A really popular song circulating the churches today is entitled, “Good Good Father”. It captures the revelation of the writer of the goodness of God and His heart as a Father. I’d recommend listening to this song as well as you step towards God in your pursuit of knowing Him. It is a continual process but it is one Father God is inviting us to come on. He wants to reveal Himself to us. He wants to be known by us. Go ahead and seek Him out today. He’s drawing near to you and inviting you to come close to Him.
