Walk with Me
I had the delight of walking in a crisp, fall morning this past week that left quite an impression on me. A foggy midst surrounded me, the fresh morning air was exhilarating and the bold colors of leaves transformed by autumns touch brought life and diversity to an otherwise grey back drop.
With transcendent peace filling my soul a scene came to mind, one in which I was not present at its occurrence but this morning presented the potential to enjoy a similar experience. The scene found in Genesis 3, although marred by the unfortunate circumstances post the fall of man, glimpses a re-occurring event in which God of the universe desired to meet with Adam for a walk in the garden. What an adventure that must have been? The Creator of the universe conversed with creature enjoying perfect harmony and peace in a beautiful garden yet untouched by the ravages of sin.
“And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” Genesis 3:8-9 ESV
Although the picture would have been more beautiful before the fall, it reveals a heart desire of God the Father echoed throughout the pages of the bible and still relevant to the life of any believer today.
God desires to interact and be with mankind.
This is not in any sort of insecure or needy way. Since God is completely all-sufficient any move He makes toward us has always been and will always be voluntary. But that’s just it! He does voluntarily move towards us to have relationship with us!
To “walk with God” is a very familiar phrase in Christian circles and when being used it is usually referring to living our lives in such a way that we follow God along His plans for our life. This is certainly one aspect of the phrase. But on my morning stroll another interpretation of this concept stood out to me.
As my eyes took in all that God had made I became more aware of Him with me and that morning became an opportunity to invite Him in to my walking. To "walk with Him" or “do my walking – with Him”. Becoming more aware of Him with me in my walking allowed Him to turn my morning walk into an adventure!
An encounter with God takes the ordinary
and turns it into extraordinary
and all of life is an opportunity for interaction with
An acknowledgement of His presence with us throughout every aspect of our day makes the fruit of His Spirit within us, love, joy, peace, patience, etc., more evident throughout the day. And who couldn’t use more of these good attributes in their day?!
The Father extends this invitation to us, “walk with Me”. Whatever we are doing He wants us to become aware of Him and welcome Him as a part of it. Let us respond and let our lives become a walk with Him truly worth taking.
